Students at Baxter Academy are expected to be able to show evidence that they can actively meet the following standards, decided upon by the staff as a whole.
- Initiative & Perseverance: demonstrate initiative and perseverance in their learning
- Collaboration: collaborate effectively and ethically as a team member
- Inquiry & Investigation: ask creative questions to guide research
- Problem Solving: frame problems and use design methods to develop solutions
- Information Processing: analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and apply data
- Integration: gain and apply thinking and knowledge across fields
- Writing: write effectively in a variety of formats
- Communication: present work publicly in an organized and purposeful way
- Reflection: reflect on and articulate their growth as a learner, as well as the relevance and impact of their work
- Civic Awareness: demonstrate responsible and ethical behavior and participates proactively in the community
- Initiative & Perseverance: demonstrate initiative and perseverance in their learning
initiative & perseverance
As evidence of Initiative & Perseverance, I have included work from Intro to CAM. I selected this because the course was generally self paced, and while most of the class was not as engaged, myself and a few other students tried our best to learn what we could. We had to spend a lot of time researching terms on our own to understand different aspects about G-Code, CNC milling and tool paths in a new software environment (AutoDesk 360). This also shows problem solving.
COLLABORATION
As evidence of Collaboration, I have selected work I did on an extracurricular activity: VEX Robotics. I actively participate on the Maine School of Science & Math's VEX team, and competed in competitions around the state. After qualifying for the state championship, we had to work together to excel at our performance there in order to impress the judges. Because of the travel distance, we all collaborated through the internet and extensive phone calls to create top notch presentations, multimedia and T-shirts. In the end, we did not win the competition due to mechanical error, but received an Excellence Award for the state, qualifying us for the World Championship. This is a continuous collaboration as the World Championship approaches, we are constantly developing as a team to be as efficient and present ourselves in the best possible way.
Inquiry & Investigation
As evidence of Inquiry & Investigation, I have selected my Central Nervous System (CNS) project for my Anatomy class here at Baxter. This project required extensive research of an assigned body system, and the creation of an essay as well as a formal presentation with a group of people assigned the same topic. In the research in order to develop the essay, I had to research the extensive functions and parts that the CNS consists of and become familiar enough with them to speak in front of the class in great detail.

Information Processing
As evidence of Information Processing, I have included research from Model UN. I decided upon this after spending extensive time reading through over 500 pages of information on my assigned country. In Model UN we represent our assigned countries at a three day conference with students from all over the state. In order to do so efficiently, you must familiarize yourself with every aspect of your country, other countries and your assigned discussion topic, as well as be ready to discuss almost anything you possibly can. The screenshot above is of PDFs from the UN Sec-General Office on Child Soldiers (my assigned topic in the Special Session on Children). Being able to understand how to find, read, analyze, and present these documents as well as countless more is crucial to how well you perform in the conference.
Integration
|
|
As evidence of Integration, I have selected two Humanities projects to show. I selected these projects because they show how I integrated Graphic Design and digital media skills into a writing assignment. By doing this I was able to present the information in a creative, engaging way. Alfred Stieglitz: a Portrait Revolution (Left) was an independent project on photography in the early 1900's, and explores how Stieglitz's work changed photography across the country and the world. Modernism: Arts in America (Right) was a collaboration that covered how art existed in different mediums, during the 1930's, and the rise of modernist society. I worked with other students on the writing sections and then developed the magazine myself in GIMP.
Writing
|
As evidence of this standard, I have included an essay I wrote for Film Literacy during the second trimester. This essay is a standard, 5 paragraph essay and was written as an analysis of the movie Maze Runner (2014). This paper is structured clearly, and provides evidence and analysis of the source material.

communication
See - Reflection section on Flex Friday.
reflection
As evidence of Reflection, I have selected my work in my Flex Friday this year. My project is Apparel Marketing & Multimedia. In which, we have developed a campaign to raise money for charities, known and unknown across the globe. As the title says, Apparel is our focus, and we are designing shirts. We have created three shirts so far, two of which are pictured above. This project helps us engage in the community, learn about marketing, while exploring design and multimedia interests. We find ourselves frequently presenting our project and sharing our goals, so we are always communicating with others. We also frequently reflect on the information and feedback that we receive.
civic awareness
As evidence of Civic Awareness I have chosen to include my work in developing Baxter Academy's Interact Club. Interact is the youth division of the Rotary Club, and together with other students, I have helped to establish us with the Portland Rotary. I represented our school at an Interact Conference for the state of Maine with a few other students only two weeks after being a club. I also am seated as the secretary of our club.
